No Limit Texas Hold Em: Aces on the Board
I was playing a multi table tournament earlier today, when I was reminded several times of one of the worst plays that I see online players make.A� Sometimes I can go for a Sit n Go or two and not see it much, but in this case, I doubled my stack twice within 5 minutes and watched another player do the same thing. It seems so simple, but some players, particularly online, seem intent on making it. I am talking about ignoring an Ace on the board.
Seriously, folks, if you see an Ace on the board, you can bet someone has one to match it. At least one.
So many players seem to just talk themselves into ignoring what is right in front of their face. I am not talking speaking of playing position late, and when an Ace comes on the flop, chances are neither you nor the big blind has it.
No, I am talking about being in early position with something like K-Q and continuing to bet or call bets with an Ace on the board. More than once, I began to think I was being slow played by someone with a set, after my Ace paired up and I continued to get calls on large bets. Both times it turned out to be someone who didnt even have an Ace but had some type of middle pair.
Once a guy with K-T off suit called me all the way to the River and until I had taken his entire chip stack. The board was A-T-4 rainbow with a 7 and a 2 on the Turn and River. I guess he just wanted to "wish" those T's good, or something.
Maybe it is stubbornness, maybe just a sign of a novice player, but one thing that you need to do asap if you are going to get better at No Limit Texas Hold'em is quit calling bets when it is obvious that you are beaten.
The thing about Aces is,A� everybody plays them, so if you see one pop up on the board, most of the time your middle pair is just plain no good. It is really as simple as that. I think it is OK to take a shot with middle pair or at least see the flop with junk like Q-9 off suit sometimes, if you want to make that part of your game, but when the flop comes A-9-4, you have got to get out.
I guess it is tempting to try and suck out for some players, but if you notice yourself doing this from time to time, it is a huge gaping hole in your game that is so incredibly easy to shore up. You took a shot and now you are beaten. Move on to the next hand. Your poker bankroll will thank you for it.

No Limit Texas Hold Em Poker Button Play
Something that many online poker players could benefit greatly from is varying their play on the button. If you play much online poker, you will run into a ton of players who will always feel the need to raise when they have the best position, on the button. This play becomes way too predictable and at many times, totally unnecessary.
For example, early on in a Sit n Go, what is the point of trying to steal the blinds from the button? There are no antes yet and the blinds are small, you are likely to make a $100 raise in order to gain $30. This does not make a lot of sense and it is going to set the stage for players in the Blinds to play back at you later on when you need to steal blinds. What can also happen in these situations is that you get yourself into trouble for very little gain.
If you raise from the button with Q-3 off suit and get a call or a re-raise, what are you going to do? Hopefully fold because if you call you stand to risk losing even more chips with what is likely to be an inferior hand. Remember, even though a player is in one of the Blinds, they can still be dealt good cards. You should wait to make these button raises to steal the blinds until it is worth it to do so.
The other problem is that (and this is especially in SnG's or multi-table tournament play) if you make early button raises and do steal some pots, you will set yourself up to be played back at later. Players will remember your stealing ways and they may let you get away with it while it doesn't mean much, but they will remember and/or make a note and you will find yourself being re-raised all-in later on when you can least afford it.
Button play in online poker has become much like the continuation bet; standard and predictable. If you are a smart player, you will vary your button play to throw your opponents off. I like to make button raises when I have a big hand. Many times you can take down a huge pot this way because your opponents in the Blinds figure you are just making a position play. Another option is to simply call from the button and then take the pot down after the Flop. Remember, you have position, so many times both Blinds will check to you and you will be able to make a nominal bet and take the pot. Try these various strategies as a way to strengthen your button play and you will find that it makes you a better, harder to read, poker player.

Don't Be a Suited Sucker
It appears to me that every time poker gives birth to a new player they all have the same birth defect - an unnatural attraction to suited cards. I don't know if it's the fact that the cards almost match, but don't. I don't know if people think they were dealt a pair. I just don't know. But if I had a dollar for every time someone played a suited card then... oh wait, I do have lots of dollars from that! Never mind.
Here's why playing cards just because they are suited is stupid and you shouldn't do it.
First, suited cards bring maybe 1-2% more value preflop than unsuited cards. So if you aren't playing K6 unsuited, why dear God why are you playing K6 suited? "I read they make a flush about as often as a pocket pair makes trips." That may be true; however, the next four points will show why this still doesn't make them profitable cards to play.
Second, the flush draw player is the EASIEST player in the world to spot. That means you're going to have to overpay to draw after the flop and/or you will not get paid off when the flush hits. My Amish grandmother can spot a flush draw player!
Third, if you're drawing to a flush and get action after it hits, you better either have the nut flush or check the cards for a board pair. Flush drawers are so easy to spot that the player with the over-flush or the full house is praying that you hit.
Fourth, depending on what you're holding, you might get sucked into a pot where you made top pair crappy kicker. You originally entered the hand looking to make a flush. But you hit top pair and now you think it might be good, so you decide to stick around and find out.
Fifth, and this is the most pathetic player of all, you may have a stroke and decide, when your flush misses on the river, that you can bluff the other player out of the pot. Good luck with that. It's a great way to make a really large bet into a pot that you'll lose over and over and over again.
Are five enough reasons enough? Here's the best way to look at suited cards: Suited Cards aren't suited until AFTER the flop IF the flop gave you a legitimate flush draw. Prior to that, they are just two cards. Play them or not based on their value, not the fact that the little symbols look alike.
If you do this you'll save yourself a lot of money and embarrassment. You won't tilt off because you won't make idiotic moves, and you'll be able to play every hand with confidence and control.

Making the Final Table in a Multi-Table Poker Tournament
Many people playing online poker prefer to play cash games, not knowing that the real money is waiting in the big Multi Table Tournaments (MTT). In fact only one big finish in the top ten of a MTT will boost your bankroll enormously. Even if you are a good poker player you would need several months if not years to make that much money playing cash games only.
If you play online poker chances are that you already participated in an online poker tourney. And if you read a poker book or articles on internet forums on how to play these tournaments you will most probably have found the same tactics in all of them. Most strategy guides suggest that you play very tight in the beginning and loosen up close to the bubble of a tournament. It is not a bad strategy per se but nowadays nearly 80% of the online players know how to play poker. And a lot of these players read strategy articles or books too. So ask yourself the question if everybody plays according to the same tactics how can you be better than the others?
The answer is simple: You have to use a different approach.
Instead of playing tight in the beginning you play any hand that has a certain potential of hitting the nuts on the flop. That means any suited ace to potentially hit the nut flush, any connectors suited or unsuited to hit straights or flushes and any pocket pair to hit a set. When you actually flop a monster just push all in. Your goal is to see the flop as cheap as possible. If there is a raise in front of you just fold your hand. Playing this way you will be able to double up your stack in about 60% to 70% of the time and in about 30% to 40% of the time you will even be able to triple your chips in the early stages of a tournament.
Continue to play this way until the blinds plus antes equal about one eights of your stack. From this point on you will play the "push or fold" style. That means if you have a strong hand you push all in and fold any other hand. The advantage of this playing style is that you will collect the blinds and the chips of the limpers without any showdown very often. Since the blinds and the antes are very high in the late stages of a tournament you will win a lot of chips. The other benefit is since you will only push all in with strong hands you will win the showdown very likely if you get called.
The double or nothing style described here is the key to making it to the final table. The biggest advantage of this strategy is that you will gain a huge amount of chips every time you win a showdown. The big secret is that you need to double up your stack a few times during a tournament to have a chance to make it deep into the money. Most players do not realize that and waste a lot of potential by playing too conservative.

Sit N Go Strategy - Online Poker Sit N Go Tournament Tips
Sit N Go tournaments are some of the most enjoyable games available in the world of online poker. Sit N Go tournaments typically consist of one table that has either 9 or 10 players. Once those 9 or 10 spots are filled, the tournament begins. Blinds are typically raised every 5-10 minutes. Play continues until one player has all the chips. Typically, the top three players make money. The first place player will receive 50% of the winnings, the second place player will receive 35%, and the third place player will receive 15%.
It is important to know the correct strategy to utilize in a Sit N Go tournament. The strategy is much different than one would utilize at a cash game table. In a cash game, players can often afford to play tight and patiently, waiting for a monster hand and cashing in on it. However, with the blinds being raised over time, a Sit N Go player must know how and when to change gears in order to consistently make money over time.
There are three main parts to Sit N Go tourneys: the early stage, the middle stage, and the late stage. Your actions and aggressiveness need to change drastically in these different stages. The following is a breakdown of what you need to do in each stage of the tournament.
Early Stage
The early stage lasts until there are only 6 players remaining. One word needs to ring out over and over in your head while the game is at this stage, and that word is TIGHT. You need to play very, very tight in this stage of the game. The blinds will still be very small, so you can afford to sit and wait for very strong hands such as AA, KK, QQ, AJs, AQ, and AK. You can also take a chance that you flop a set on other pocket pairs, or that you flop a monster with small suited connectors. There will be kamikaze pilots in this early stage that love to push their stack in with any kind of garbage. Don't let them take you out with them. Play your strong hands aggressively, and let your weak hands go without much of a fight.
Middle Stage
This stage lasts from the time 6 players left until there are only 3 players left. You need to ratchet up the aggressiveness drastically here. If you have a big hand, make players pay, and pay big, to see a flop. Make them pay even more to chase a draw. This is the area of the tournament that you can accumulate lots of chips, since players start to smell the money and get very timid. Take advantage of this, especially when there are only 4 players left. When it gets down to bubble time, players will play like little old ladies.
Late Stage
You only need to know two words for this stage, all in. If you have a hand, play it ruthlessly aggressively, pushing all your chips into the middle more often than not.

Will You Be Able to Play Online Poker Using the New Apple iPad?
With the introduction this week of Apple's new iPad tablet, you may as a poker player have wondered about its capabilities for playing online poker. After some early analysis of the technical components of this otherwise fantastic new product, it really doesn't look that way, and even if you could, rounders would choose not to, given that multi-tabling would be even more unlikely.
The iPad screen itself coming in at a 9.7 inch diagonal LED backlit glossy widescreen, would've actually been great for a poker table in terms of dimensions, but that would only be for those players who like to play one table at a time. More and more players these days multi-table.
But that's not to say you might not want to relax on the couch with the family and have a little game going in the background while everyone's watching the movie or something along the lines. In that sense, another problem arises and that's the memory required to run a poker program. First of all you have to download the software from the poker site. Have you downloaded poker software from a poker site on your iPhone? No, it's really not meant for that, and the premise of the iPad is rather similar to the iPod in that the memory is based on a flash drive, and the storage is rather limited compared to a laptop or desktop.
There's also the problem with Wi-Fi and 3G being able to handle the transfer of data at a rapid rate reliably. So even if you could download poker software the transfer of information would be suspect, and the iPad team has come right out saying that it does not support flash technology on the web, and we know that some poker sites have a flash re-player or so you're already limited as to not being able to use all the features of the game.
Keep in mind as well that only Full Tilt Poker and Poker Stars are Mac compatible as it is right now. To play on another site or to use third party poker software, Mac users have used software like Parallels which is a bridge program allowing PC software to work on Mac hardware. So even if the iPad had the power to run poker software, you'd also need to be running a bridge program, and that means multitasking which the iPad clearly says it cannot do.
So if you imagined taking your iPad out into the backyard this summer and squeeze in a sit and go tournament here and there, it's highly unlikely at this point. If you were waiting for this product for some portable poker playing, then you can safely go ahead now and spend the extra 500 bucks or so for a full featured laptop.
